In brief: This is normal

Babies lose 5-10% of their weight the first week.
Most babies regain their birth weight by 10 days of life.

In brief: May loose up to 10%

Most newborns can loose up to 10% of their body weight during the first week of life, and after that will gain about an ounce per day.
It is concerning if a baby has not returned to their birht weight by 7 to 10 days after birth. Make sure you are feeding on demand and that the baby is latching on well. If you are bottle feeding remember to also feed on demand.

In brief: All newborns do

Nl newborns have extra fluid on board, like fluid mom retains in her legs, to tide them over until the bm comes in at 3-4 days.
They also need to clean out a 9mo backlog of thick sticky poo. At 3-4 days, the tarry stools have cleared & we see baby near thier minimum wt. Feeding volume increases & they begin to gain and pass birth wt by 1-2 wks. Continuing loss should be evaluated by your doctor.

In brief: All newborns do

All newborn babies lose weight right after birth.
They are meant to and its normal. Their body is comprised of more water than older kids and this is shedding of water weight. Losing up to 10% of the birth weight is normal and should only lsat a week to 10 days at most. Most babies are back at birth weight in the first week and then gain steadily after that.
