Can it be valuable to withdraw from life awhile when I am depressed?

Sometimes we become overwhelmed by the stimulation from our environment, and it's fine to take yourself away from the stimulation to refuel, reflect, etc. However, it becomes problematic, when withdrawal "from life" interferes with your functioning, e.g. -- you start missing work, school, kids activities. It's all about working toward balancing things out in life.
