In brief: Sometimes
Like most conditions it is part inherited tendancy and part environment.

Mitral regurgitation results from weakening of the leaflet tissue or chordae in simple degenerative mr. Barlows disease is more severe tissue degeneration. Papillary muscle dysfunction usually is because of heart attack. Some of the tissue malformations may be hereditary to some degree

In brief: Yes
There is a form of mitral regurgitation due to mitral valve prolapse, also called a floppy valve which can run in families.
