In brief: Fibromyalgia
It can progress to depression/anxiety when chronic pain & disabilities persist.

This is a controversial issue.
Many people (and doctors) believe that fibromyalgia is the physical expression of depression and in some cases i would agree with that too. However, many people ( in some studies over 70%) develop depression as a result of chronic pain not the other way round. This is what i see most often.

In brief: Not directly
People with any long standing pain are obviously at risk for depression fibromyalgia does not cause or directly increase risk of depression nor does depression cause fibromyalgia but might make symptoms more bothersome if you have both.
Interestingly several treatments are also antidepressants but most antidepressants don't help.

In brief: No
While depression and fibromyalgia often are seen in the same patient, fm is not purely a psych issue.

#fibromyalgia pain is real ; commonly worsens with lying down.
Chronic nighttime pain disrupts restorative sleep; causing chronic daytime fatigue. People with chronic sleeplessness ; fatigue naturally get depression. This is not type depression pharmaceuticals can effectively treat. Deep refreshing sleep needed. For this to occur pain generation from spastic peripheral muscles must be abolished.

FM sufferers often have fatigue, likely from chronic non-restorative sleep. I have seen many improve & deepen sleep & increase restorative quatity of sleep using softer mattress, lying on side with least hip pain, using body pillow vs. knees & using soporific effects of medicinal cannabis, especially eaten as the more time-release form of baked confections; only in states where authorized.

FM can be diagnosed by a test.  In 2010, Wolfe F. and Wolfe F. et al published a questionnaire that purports to inclusively and diagnostically identify FM patients.  It logically follows that diagnosis of FM is not a "diagnosis of exclusion".  The authors point out that patients should also be subjected to usual and customary medical evaluations to identify other medical disorders.
