In brief: Slow the heart

There are 3 types of calcium channel blockers: first is norvasc/also called amlodipine.
It opens the arteries fighting hbp, angina, and even raynaud's. 2nd is cardizem/diltiazem which is 1/2 way between Norvasc & verapamil (isoptin). Verapamil is the 3d and good for treating irregular heart beats, hbp, and angina as well as migraines. It likely slowed his heart &/or lowered the BP too far. Hrs.

In brief: Verapamil effects

Verapamil is designed to relax muscles both in the arteries and the heart.
It also has a potent effect on the electrical system of the heart--slowing conduction. This latter problem would result in slowing of the heart rate, and in certain circumstances, severely so. The combination of digoxin & verapamil is well known to produce this kind of severe effect. There are many other drugs that interact.
