Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is an abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, particularly of the ventricles.
Often the septum, the wall between the ventricles, is much thicker than the other walls. When the heart contracts, this abnormally thick septum creates a narrow area that can block, or "obstruct", the flow of blood out of the left ventricle.
