In brief: Niacin, sterols &...

Supplements & lifestyle changes often lower cholesterol as well as drugs, without the expense & potential hazards.
Niacin works best but causes flushing that you adapt to- no-flush Niacin is also available. Plant sterol extracts like beta-sitosterol work well. Pantethine is a bit pricey and not well-known but very effective. While lowering cholesterol often helps, look at it in context-see comment:.

The reason to lower cholesterol is to prevent cardiovascular disease, but lowering cholesterol is usually not the most important strategy to reduce cardiac risk. For a broader perspective, as well as more info on diet & lifestyle to lower cholesterol, please see this fine essay by Mark Hyman MD: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/lower-cholesterol-naturally_b_815393.html and also see:

Another very interesting perspective on preventing heart disease by heart surgeon Dwight Lundell that speaks even more to the heart of the matter than Dr. Hyman's fine article: http://www.sott.net/articles/show/242516-Heart-Surgeon-Speaks-Out-On-What-Really-Causes-Heart-Disease
