In brief: Former preemie?

The great majority of women born as preemies can have normal pregnancies.
Short-gut syndrome after necrotizing enterocolitis makes it hard for a pregnant woman to get enough nutrition (she has trouble absorbing the necessary vitamins, nutrients, calories) for herself, but she also has nourish her unborn baby - sounds like a problem in the making. The nutritional deficiencies can be bad for a baby.

In brief: High risk pregnancy

Short bowel syndrome is also known as intestinal failure because the intestine fails to provide adequate fluid and nutrition to the body - often from inadequate intestinal length.
These patients often require medications to slow their stool output, or fluids and intravenous nutrition to avoid dehydration and malnutrition. Some even progress to an intestine trnasplant. Result: high risk pregnancy.
