Exercise can change the rate but eventually you will become more efficent at exercise (i hope).
Various exercise has variable effect. Slow long distnace running burns fat better while weight training gives you more muscle to burn energy as well. Fast/hard aerobic work burns carbs but not fat. You will need a blend of these.
