In brief: Infection...

Acute bronchitis is due to infection of the airways.
If the infection is severe enough, it could result in decreased oxygen levels in the body which, in turn, could cause the heart to have a fatal arrhythmia. Fortunately, this does not happen often as most cases of acute bronchitis resolve with treatment. It could also infect the lungs, causing pneumonia, which is sometimes fatal, esp in elderly.
