Acutely icing an injured area reduces the inflammatory response/swelling to the area.
There is no exact period that defines the acute phase but icing upto 2-3 days post injury is recommended. Afterwards icing following irritating activities (including physical therapy) should be continued for several days/weeks. Heat can be introduced 3-4 days after injury to encourage blood flow to injured area.
