In brief: Gradual process

I would recommend 3x / week with either walking, cycling or swimming on a regular basis to increase aerobic capacity and endurance.
The amount should be increase by 10% / week to avoid overuse injuries. This plan should be in conjuction with some flexibility and core exercises also done on a regular basis "it is easier to stay in shape than get in shape, so go gradual".
