In brief: Red Hour Glass Belly

Most adult female black widows exhibit the red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen; some may have a pair of red spots or have no marking at all.

In brief: Black Widow.

Black widows are usually about ½” long.
The southern black widow has glossy black abdomen with a red “hour glass” design. The northern black widow may be brown colored ; usually has red (sometimes yellow or white) dots along the middle of its upper abdomen. They are nocturnal.
