Will I need reading glasses to correct presbyopia after I have cataract removal?

In brief: Sometimes

The majority of lenses inserted after cataract removal are single vision, corrected for distance, and you will need to have eyeglasses to see at near. Newer lense designs are now coming on the market to correct vision at all distances.
You can discuss this with your ophthalmologist who is doing the surgery. Usually there is an extra charge for these "premium" lenses.

Ask your doctor if a multifocal or accommodative implant is right for you...

In brief: Maybe

If you select an intraocular lens that corrects you for distance vision, you will need to wear glasses to read.
The only option to read after cataract surgery is to set one eye for distance and the other for near (monovision), or if you are a candidate, select an advanced technology bifocal implant in both eyes. Your ophthalmologist should be able to help you with this decision.
