In brief: A scratched cornea

The cornea is the clear dome shaped tissue that is in the front of the eye.
When you scratch the cornea, you have damaged the surface layer or epithelial cells. It will cause tearing, redness, light sensitivity and blurry vision until it heal. Healing times vary but in general range from 1-4 days.

In brief: Defect in front eye

A corneal abrasion is a name for a defect in the front surface (epithelium) of the clear window of your eye (cornea).
Most are caused by trauma, and most heal well in a short time without permanent consequences. Treatment usually involves drops to help the discomfort and prevent infection. Sometimes, other treatments like bandage contact lenses or patching are required.

A corneal abrasion is a scratch to the cornea of the eye.
The cornea is the clear window that is in from of the colored part of the eye (iris). There is a clear skin like surface layer called the epithelium, and if the layer gets scratched or abraided like a cut or scratch on the back of the hand, then you have a corneal abrasion. Usually easily treated and heals quickly.
