Many causes. There are many causes of seizures including, abnormalities of metabolism such as excessively low blood sugar, alcohol poisoning and drug intoxication, low oxygen to the brain during breathing problems, acute trauma to the head and brain, infections. these are not considered epilepsy. Epilepsy is defined as seizures coming directly from the brain without any of the above mentioned causes.
Diff. kinds seizures. Diagnosis is on a clinical basis by exclusion. In fact, epilepsy is seizures from an underlying cause. Seizure is a paroxysmal event due to excessive discharge from a group of CNS neurons. General seizures involve a wide area of the brain in a symmetric pattern while focal ones are in one area. Grand mal and complex partial seizures include loss of consciousness while simple petit mal do not.
