Normal bone is based on standard deviations of bone loss as compared to normal bone. The more negative the number the more bone loss. Normal 0 to -1 standard deviations, osteopenia is -1 to -2.5 standard deviations, and anything more negative then -2.5 standard deviations is osteoporosis.
