In brief: Get a x-ray

You need to make sure it's not broken first! next, the stability of the joint needs to be assessed.
If the colateral ligament is ruptured, you will need surgery. Otherwise, a splint for support should be sufficient. It will take 4-6 weeks to heal if it is just a sprain.

In brief: See hand surgeon

While many dislocations or other sprains will heal well with rest, gentle motion, and adequate protection, some injuries - such as an ulnar collateral ligament injury (skier's or gamekeeper's thumb) may require surgery for appropriate healing.
