In brief: Nothing good

Baby teeth 'hold space' for the adult teeth.
If a cavity is untreated in a baby tooth for an extended period of time, the space for the adult tooth may be lost (in addition to the potential for pain/swelling/infection in the baby tooth). Thereby crowding the adult teeth. But, if a baby tooth is about to be lost, then a filling will not be necessary. Check with your dentist.

In brief: Premature loss

The baby teeth have a significant role in preserving space in the gum line for the eventual emergence of the adult teeth.
Failing to care for baby teeth results in premature loss, generalized decline in overall health, underdevelopment of the jaw and excessive crowding when adult teeth come in. Kids on federal assistance begin receiving covered visits as early as 6m where special meds are applied.

In brief: Pain

The child can have pain, infection, and premature loss of the tooth.
This loss can affect speech, self esteem, and may also result in shifting of the secondary teeth resulting in the need for orthodontics. Please see a dentist.
