In brief: Bleeding, high BP
Sadly, women are still dying around the world during childbirth.
Some conditions could be prevented by better care and closer hospitals. Others cannot. Over the ages, leading causes of death eg infection have been better controlled in developed nations. However, it is still difficult to prevent progression of rising blood pressure as in preeclampsia and bleeding from placental or uterine problems.

The top three causes of maternal death in the United States are now pulmonary embolism, post-partum hemorrhage, and pre-eclampsia. Infection is number four.
