In the past, when amniocentesis was associated with a 1% risk of complications, the risk of loss was the same as the risk for down syndrome at 35 years of age.
Nowadays, the risk from the amniocentesis is probably closer to 1/1, 000 and amnio is an option for all women after counseling. Additionally, non-invasive prenatal diagnosis is now available (maternit21 by sequenom) and will replace amnios.
