In brief: MAZE and afib

In its earliest form, this was a very involved and high risk open heart surgical procedure.
Over the years it has been refined to the point where it is much less risky and is often performed as part of other types of cardiac surgery. Catheter-based techniques are also used to treat afib in a less invasive way but should be performed by an experienced cardiac electrophysiologist.

In brief: Atrial fibrillation

The maze procedure is not commonly used these days.
However, electrophysiologist cardiologist do ablations in the lab that can cure atrial fib, if the patient is a good candidate.
