Just got pregnant for the first time! What do I need to know now about genetics?

Carrier Screening. Congratulations! You should talk to a doctor, geneticist or genetics counselor if there is a history of any particular diseases in your family like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia or any history of birth defects like cleft palate. Based on your family history, you may want to get carrier screening done.
Family. If you have a preponderance of a specific genetic disorder in either family, you could need testing, but generally that is never done routinely. Fishing expeditions rarely catch any fish that you want or even need to worry about.
