In brief: Bleeding, tenderness

Signs would include bleeding when brushing, swelling, and redness.
If an area bleeds or is irritated keep it clean. Most people want to not brush there until it heals, but that is not correct. Clean it out and it will heal. If you have lots of areas like this go to your dentist for a good cleaning and more instruction.

In brief: Gums that bleed

Gingivitis is the beginning stages, and by definition, your gums are inflamed, and you might see them bleed when you brush and floss.
If this is left untreated, then the infection moves deeper into the jaw, and it progresses to the more severe, periodontal disease.

Early changes - color - increased redness as blood vessels proliferate and swell, swelling of the tissues, bleeding of the gums.
Get a good professional cleaning - have you brushing/flossing techniques checked and brush/floss daily.
