Several. Fatigue, fever, easy bruising, infection are some of the symptoms of acute leukemia. Having any of these symptoms, however, does not mean that someone has leukemia.
Bone marrow exam. The basic tests include blood review, flow cytometry but the definitive test is a bone marrow biopsy which gives the detailed information about type and prognosis of the acute leukemia.
See below... A blood test (cbc with morphology) is usually the initial test when a diagnosis of leukemia is suspected. Afterwards, the studies that are necessary for a complete characterization include bone marrow aspiration for morphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular analysis, as well as lumbar puncture for CSF analysis. Other tests may also be necessary on a case-by-case basis.
It is a Blood Cancer. Acute leukemia is a virulent and rapidly progressive blood cancer which can be detected with a blood test. There are two types of Acute leukemia, based on the cell of origin. One is called AML (Acute Myeloid leukemia) and the 2nd one is called ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia. These are two different diseases, requiring a different treatment which is largely based on use of Chemotherapy.
Depends. Depends on the type, cytogenetic profiles, age, overall condition, preference. In general, combination of systemic chemo plus minus biological therapy then followed by either consolidation chemo or bone marrow transplant if indicated. Discuss further with your oncologist. Certain acute leukemia is treated with derivative vitamin a, plus minus arsenic. Clinical trial and palliative are available too.
