In brief: Let them help!

The amish have a tradition of spoiling their children to around 18mo then slowly and humanely incorporating them into family life by allowing them to participate with appropriate tasks.
Supervision, guidance, rewards are provided by parents who do this successfully. Sometimes a parent needs to take over the task then introduce it later. But some kids really like being a "big helper" and learn lots.

In brief: Well...

This is strictly a personal question.
Sometimes writing down a schedule as a guide is helpful. But each family is different.Remember that the kids should come first.
