Rhd causes thickening and blockage (stenosis) of the mitral valve which can lead to congestive heart failure (shortness of breath, swelling, fatigue).
In addition, the left atrium enlarges which often interferes with conduction of electrical impulses resulting in atrial fibrillation. Without treatment, blood clots can form in the enlarged and stagnant left atrium leading to stroke.
