In brief: Cuts the Acid Nerve
The vagus nerve goes to the stomach and triggers acid secretion and stomach emptying.
The nerve continues down to the small intestine for allowing food to move food through the intestines. We cut the vagus nerve when there are ulcers and excess acid production. A selective cutting of the nerve can decrease the acid production from the upper stomach, but allow the lower stomach to empty.
