Lactose intolerance can be proven with a breath hydrogen test, although usually if the symptoms resolve when off lactose and recur when lactose is reintroduced, that's sufficient proof.
For milk protein allergy, skin tests, checking bm's for blood, blood allergy tests, and and elimination diet are used.

For lactose, assuming symptoms not severe in any way) best thing to do is avoid all dairy products for 4-5 days, and be sure your symptoms are all gone..Then try a small amount of cheese or milk..If the symptoms recur...Do the same thing....If it happens again you probably are lactose intolerant.
