In brief: Less cancer
There are countless studies that show no cumulative ill effects of birth control pills.
Hormonal changes (mostly desired, but undesired too) are all temporary and cease almost immediately upon discontinuation - within one menstrual cycle. Interestingly the rate of uterine and ovarian cancer declines for the remainder of your life, proportional to use, up to 50% after 10 years.

In brief: Very safe
While on birth control your ovaries are suppressed.
Birth control does not alter a woman's fertility one way or the other. Birth control decreases a woman's risk for ovarian and uterine cancer. It has no effect on risk of breast cancer. It decreases a woman's risk for endometriosis, fibroids, and lifetime risk of hysterectomy.
