Engorgement occurs when your body is trying to establish the correct amount of milk to produce for your baby.
Early on, there is little milk production. As your body increases the hormone levels that cause breast milk productions, sometimes there is more milk produced than the baby needs for adequate growth. During this time, the breasts are painful until things normalize (or the baby feeds).
