In brief: Not exactly

12 year olds should not be drinking coffee.
They need to sleep well and coffee will interfere with this!

In brief: Caffeine Use

The level of caffeine in coffee, tea, sodas, etc.
will define the safety for children. At age 12 years he may already be drinking sodas and other "sport drinks" without a problem. The danger is an elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and tremors. The other compounds that ware in these drinks generally are neutral to these side effects. Drink decaffeinated coffee (Alex)

A large metastudy the last few years looked at whether or not coffee is a carcinogen, caused intestinal problems, and other major problems. Results were that it isn't correlated with these conditions, but yes, it does present more local threats--headaches, tremors, sleeplessness, etc. Interestingly, it is the first line of defense (without sugar) against ADD, according to many pediatricians.
