The rash of chickenpox starts out as red, itchy or painful blisters; then they open up and scab over and then they will commonly look darker than normal skin for weeks or months.
The skin should get flatter and smoother and the color should fade over time but it may take months or more. Some people will still have some residual spots even years later.

I agree, and try not to pick at or scratch the lesions. If you leave them alone they are more likely to heal up without scarring
