What's the reason for giving opiate-addicted neonates barbiturates as opposed to benzodiazepines?

Pediatrics - Neonatology

In brief: Various reasons

Infants withdrawing from opiates have been treated with many types of drugs.
The best-with the least amount of complications is opium drops or phenobarbital. Benzodiazapines have been associated with respiratory complications and are not recommended. Abstinence syndrome is complicated and should be supervised by an experienced Neonatologist. Management may take some time so try to be patient.
