In brief: A PAP smear

is the classical screening test for cervical cancer.
In this test a brushing of cells from the cervix is stained and examined under the microscope. It may pick up abnormalities before they become fully cancerous. A molecular test for the human papilloma virus (HPV) may also be done on cells collected with a PAP smear. It is a very sensitive way to detect the virus that causes the cancer.
