Could be. If you're drinking caffeine at night, it could make you anxious and jittery -- temporarily anyway. It would not nullify the overall effects of amitriptylene as an antidepressant, but might make you nervous & harder to go to sleep. If you must drink caffeine, i'd suggest doing it in the morning, and none after noon or so. Anxious people probably don't need it at all, though! Read more...
Can add to anxiety. Caffeine doesn't alter the antidepressant effect of Elavil (amitriptyline), but it can cause or worsen anxiety. So in that sense it could counteract the effect of the medication. Low to moderate amounts of caffeine shouldn't be a problem unless you're fairly sensitive to it, but on general principles i advise anxious patients to minimize caffeine. Read more...

I have gad and depression. Why does my psychiatrist want me to take elavil (amitriptyline) during the day and at bedtime now instead of just at bedtime? Many thanks

Ask ur psychiatrist . If you are doing well on a daily dosing of your medication , then let your psychiatrist know. You may have told him about symptoms or side effects that made him/ her feel that a twice daily dosing of your medication may be more beneficial. Remember that your symptom control side effects drive the adjustments to your medication so talk to your psychiatrist about your concerns. Read more...
