12 yr old Dx'd w/ Shingles in one ear. He's been vaccinated for ch. Pox & has never had the ch. Pox. Thought you had to have had ch. Pox to get shingles?

Shingles. Even the vaccine can cause shingles later on. Less common than actually having chicken pox but can happen.
It happens. The chickenpox vaccine is a live virus that was treated to make it lose most of its harmful potential. It acts similar to other members of that virus family by hibernating in your body after administration. It occasionally comes out as shingles, but at a lower frequency than those who get wild chickenpox. It also differs as the debris in the weeping sores contains the weaker vaccine virus.
