In brief: About a week

If taken in first 5 days of ur period, works right away.
If after that, takes a week to work. As for unprotected sex - I would say never. Remember, BC doesn't protect u from STDs. No matter what your partner says, remember sometimes guys lie, best to b safe and use a condom every time. Also BC is not 100%; u should always use a backup method.
