In brief: Depends
If tmd is caused by an injury it wii very likely improve even without treatment.
However if the problem is structural, it may progressively get worse without treatment. Get a diagnosis an early intervention if indicated.

In brief: Major problems
The health of the TMJ can affect one's entire health and immune system. The teeth, muscles and the jaw joints function as a triad to insure proper chewing, speaking, and other movements that we take for granted, when you have chronic TMJ dysfunction (tmd) the symptoms can develop into headaches, facial and ear pain, and facial discomfort.
You may have to be meds, you may need pt or mouthpieces.

In brief: TMJ risks
Disorders of the tmjs are not necessarily progressive and in fact.
Seem to get better over time, even without treatment. There is no knoown risk of long term tmds according to the scientific literature. However, for some people, conservative treatment helps them to tolerate the episodic pain they experience.

In brief: Ouch
The symptoms associated with TMJ are many.
Migraine headaches, jaw pain, limited opening or closing, neck pain, earaches, tingling fingers, shifting teeth, sensitive teeth, are all associated with tmj. Jaw clicking or popping, damage to the joint itself....The list goes on. The sooner it is managed, the sooner the cycle is broken.
