On our street there are all kinds of families. Other places we have looked for jobs are nuclear family towns. What effect on a child growing up there?

In brief: Up to you
Of course we all want to live like the waltons, but for most that won't happen.
How your children respond to people around you will depend much more on you than on them. Now if there are real social issues there, you might need to keep looking. However, if they are good people with loving families, it should be fine, even if there are one parent households, divorces, multigenerational houses, etc.
