In brief: After trauma

Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy.
It causes vision to be blurry and unclear. Usually catarcts occur as we get older. Traumatic cataracts occur when there has been some kind of direct trauma to the eye that causes lens damage and cloudiness.

In brief: Trauma

Cataracts are the general term for a cloudy lens in the eye.
Traumatic cataracts are sudden in onset, as opposed to our usual age-related cataracts. They can occur from a blunt trauma that does not cut the eye, but 'shocks' the cells of the lens of the eye, which then become cloudy. Or if the eye is penetrated, and the membrane that surrounds the eye is pierced, the lens will become cloudy.

In brief: Surgery risk

The surgery risk with traumatic cataracts is somewhat higher, since the membrane that has been pierced is supposed to support the lens implants that are placed during surgery.
And if the back of the membrane is also broken, it can be even messier, with a higher complication rate.

In brief: Traumatic catracts

Cataract cause: Cataract occur from change in lens proteins which cause whitening/clouding/opacity of clear lens composition: can be due to: infection/ inflammation from birth/congential (ie, rubella), old age/genetics, steroid use, trauma (causes acute change), poor diet; smoking & Diabetes increases risk.
Can be seen on microscope (slit lamp) exam easily. More info: eyedoc2020@blogspot.com
