In brief: Multiple

A cataract is a change in the transparency of the natural lens of the eye.
A few appear at birth, some from chronic or inherited disease, some from trauma or chemotherapy and most later in life. They can diffusely affect transparency, others occur in a single layer and some cause changes in various layers. If you have one your ophthalmologist can tell you which type and advise treatment.
