In brief: Let them chew
Chewing on something cold and firm is helpful.
One idea is to give them a damp washcloth that as been frozen in the freezer to chew on. Commercial teeth rings that can be frozen are available as well. Teething is a normal process. I would avoid medication like painkillers unless absolutely necessary. Most babies really don't need them.

In brief: Frozen washcloths
Teething can cause discomfort, but should not cause extreme pain for babies.
Frozen washcloths can help soothe gum discomfort. Gentle massage can also help. Teething discomfort typically only lasts 3-4 days- so it will be over quickly!

In brief: Teething remedies
Babies who are teething sometimes get pretty ornery.
Chewing on safe, nontoxic cold teething toys or on an ice-cold wascloth can help. Also, some people find homeopathic teething remedies like boiron's camilia to be effective.

In brief: Homeopathy
In addition to my other colleagues' suggestions, hyland's baby teething gel may help.
It's a mixture of several homeopathic remedies that you can rub on your baby's gums. http://tinyurl.com/lm2h9gh boiron's "camilia" product is also a mixture of homeopathic remedies (different ones from hyland's) http://camiliateething.Com/about/facts/ notably, they both contain the remedy chamomilla.

In brief: Try
Oral topical anesthetic gels are usually ineffective.
If needed use baby Motrin or tylenol (acetaminophen). You can also try chilling a pacifier or teething ring.

In brief: Massage and cold
There are many over the counter products to chill the area.
I like them better than ointment or cream , which can irritate many people. Massaging with a soft brush, or cloth can help.
