Maintaining a normal weight or at least a non-obese weight is the most important thing you can do to prevent diabetes.
Also limit sweets and eat lots of fruits and vegetables, grains and lean, small portions of meat. Grill or broil food. Don't fry or saute it. Unfortunately you can't do anything about your genetics so do the best you can with your weight and diet.
