In brief: There Are Several

Most of the time, severe bleeding during or after giving birth, called a hemorrhage, is caused by problems with muscle tone of the uterus, problems with your blood clotting chemicals, retained placental tissue or trauma to the uterus.
Blood tests for platelets, blood cell counts and other clotting factors help determine if the blood chemicals play a part or need to be treated. (cbc, pt/inr, ptt).
