What are the tests for intussusception?

Ultrasound and enema. Ultrasound can locate the mass of intussusception with characteristic sonographic finding, target or doughnut sign.This usually ileocolic intussusception where distal small bowel,ileum,telescopes into large bowel. Usually diagnostic enema performed for confirmation and therapeutic reduction to avoid surgery. Sometimes intussusception detected on CT exam.
Rectal bleeding. Classic hallmarks of intussusception in a child are abdominal pain, lethargy and rectal bleeding (currant jelly stools). It is diagnosed with an air-contrast or barium enema. This xray study makes the diagnosis and in 80% of cases also cures the disease by reducing the intussusception.
