In brief: Typically yes
Depressions can resolve or diminish spontaneousy but that can take months or even years.
Talk therapy and/or medication help depressions resolve faster and more completely. The goal of most treatment is to achieve a complete remission.

In brief: Depression recurs
In about 50% of those who recover from a depressive episode.
Risk of recurrence increases with severity but not duration of the first depression, family history of depression, pattern of negative thinking, poor social support, & number of stressful life events. Risk of recurrence is lessened by learning positive thinking & stress management & maintaining social support. Cognitive therapy helps.
