Exam and x-ray. While diagnosis of some systemic arthritis which may affect the foot (i.e. Rheumatoid arthritis) may require specific lab tests, the vast majority of foot arthritis can be diagnosed with a good physical exam and plain x-rays. Exam usually shows decreased joint motion and x-rays show decreased joint space (secondary to loss of cartilage) of the involved joint (s).
