In brief: ITP

Thrombocytopenia or low platelet level can be caused by so many things such as drugs, platelet consumption by clots, infections, vitamin deficiency, cancer related etc.
Your doctor has to rule out all those possibilities and ultimately to do a bone marrow biopsy to eval bone marrow. See your md and discuss further re-diagnosis approach/treatment and other things you need to know re - itp.

In brief: Complete blood count

The initial test for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (itp) is a platelet count.
A platelet count is obtained with every complete blood count (CBC) or automated hemogram. The reason for doing this test is usually the appearance of multiple unexplained bruises on the skin either large (purpura) or small (petechiae). If the platelet count is low additional tests are required for diagnosis.

In brief: Thrombocytopenia

Has many causes, but they are all detected by the same test, a platelet count, usually obtained because of a clinical suspicion due to bleeding, bruising or petechiae being identified.
The clinical history and physical exam are often very helpful as well. Pts with itp are usually well appearing, lacking organomegally and with a history of a viral syndrome that preceded the onset of itp signs.
