In brief: Polysomnogram

A sleep study is called a polysomnogram and it assesses breathing patterns, arousals, oxygenation, stage of sleep and airflow.
The most common sleep disturbances can be diagnosed this way. Specialized studies are needed for narcolepsy and insomnia.

In brief: Sleep study

Most sleep disturbance does not require an overnight sleep study, but rather a complete history taking with a psychologist expert in sleep disorders.
I use sleep diaries and standardized sleep measures. But for disorders such as sleep apnea, movement disorders during sleep or symptoms that persist even with healthy behavior change an overnight study may be needed.
